Steamboat Springs For physician Jim Dudley spring has always been a time to give back, but it's also a great opportunity for student athletes to cash in on the doctor's generosity.
Dudley is one of the doctors offering high school and middle school students physicals at a reduced cost. Students should call 871-3687 to make appointments, and the physicals will be good for the 2003-2004 school year.
The physicals will take place at Steamboat Medical from May 19-22 between the hours of 4 and 8 p.m. The cost is $20, less than half the normal price of $49. That money will be donated to the SSHS Booster Club.
"I've been doing this for the last 19 years," Dudley said. "But it's not just me. Everybody in the office kicks in and takes part."
Last year, the office gave physicals to 235 young athletes, and raised $4,710 for the booster club. Dudley said all of the doctors and physicians assistants at Steamboat Medical join forces to get the job done.
"This is something that we look forward to doing every year," Dudley said. "It gives us a chance to save the kids some money, but it's also a good opportunity to sit down and visit with them. It's our chance to get to know them."
Steamboat athletics secretary Kate Parke said annual physicals are a great chance for student athletes to save money and a great fund-raiser for the Booster Club.
"It's a win-win situation for the athletes," Dudley said.
Dudley said it also helps that parents, booster club members and even students come out to help with the physicals. Volunteers are always needed to assist with check-in, phone answering, vision screening, copying and other deeds that help the doctors.
Parents and students should contact Parke at 871-3687 to make an appointment or volunteer. Students should not call Steamboat Medical for an appointment.
No one will be allowed to practice without a complete physical on file.
