— The Steamboat Springs boys junior varsity basketball team concluded the 2002-03 season 14-5 overall and 11-1 in league play to finish atop the final standings.

"We had a great season," coach Chris Adams said. "I was just really proud of the way they came together as a team. I really enjoyed this group of kids. They worked really hard and had a great attitude."

The Sailors' JV squad initially started with 24 players but the number dwindled down to 10, which proved beneficial for team chemistry.

This past season was Adams' first at the JV level, but he worked with the freshmen last year, so it made for an easier transition for both him and the players.

One thing that did not change between levels was the constant emphasis on defense and fundamentals, the foundation behind Steamboat's entire system and program.

"With the younger kids we really simplify the offensive stuff," Adams said. "Our main job is teaching the fundamentals and the skills so that they can be successful at the varsity level."

Season highlights included sweeps over league rivals Moffat County and Rifle, the two teams that finished better than Steamboat's varsity squad last season. The Sailors' lone league loss came against Delta early in the season.

After the winter break, Adams noticed his team came back different and more unselfish, which translated into victories.

"Teamwork and team chemistry are so important to success," Adams said.

Team members that played a part in the Sailors' successful season were Ryan Lobato, Nick Monterotti, Sean Murphy, Patrick Ayres, Tyler Fosdick, Henry Howard, Kyle Reynolds, Collin Hare, Patrick Weber, Dustin Moran and Scott Peterson.

Many of these players will be called upon to contribute at the varsity level next season. Several individuals saw increased varsity minutes toward the end of the season. Adams is confident his JV players are excited to take the next step up and rejoin classmates that have been on the varsity roster for at least two seasons

"I think they are looking forward to playing varsity time," Adams said.
