Steamboat Springs A Steamboat Springs woman inadvertently got her ex-boyfriend's brother in trouble this weekend when she stole what she thought was her former beau's backpack.
Three and a half grams of psilocybin mushrooms were found in a backpack in the car of Merrily Nicol Waldron, 29, Saturday evening.
Police discovered the drugs after they stopped Waldron for fleeing the scene of an accident.
Waldron hit another vehicle and sped away. When police caught up with Waldron, she was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
Police questioned Waldron about the backpack and learned it was stolen. Waldron's boyfriend had just recently ended their relationship and asked her to move out of the house, Steamboat Springs Police Sgt. Nick Bosick said.
Waldron said she took the backpack in retaliation, he said.
But she took the wrong one.
Waldron's ex-boyfriend lives with his brother, Wesly Dylan Dearborn. The two siblings both recently won backpacks from their participation in the Jimmy Heuga Snow Express for MS.
The two backpacks look similar, and Waldron did not realize she took the wrong item, Bosick said.
Police arrested Dearborn, 24, shortly after midnight Sunday morning on suspicion of possession of schedule I substances.
