Steamboat Springs — A Mexican man was arrested late Friday night on suspicion of drug distribution and use after police found a large amount of cash and scales with methamphetamine residue on them during the course of a routine drunken-driving stop.

Roberto Prieto Aguirre, 32, a Mexican citizen currently residing in Craig, was charged with distribution of a schedule II substance, unlawful use of a schedule II substance, driving while ability impaired by drugs and/or alcohol, driving without a license and weaving.

Aguirre was pulled over around 11:15 p.m. Friday on U.S. Highway 40 at the Steamboat Springs western city limits for weaving and driving 20 mph in a 50 mph zone, Colorado State Patrol Trooper Travis Randolph said.

Aguirre appeared to be intoxicated and was unable to perform roadside sobriety tests. He was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Further tests indicated he had cocaine in his system and a blood-alcohol level of .092, Randolph said.

A search of his vehicle uncovered a set of scales that tested positive for methamphetamine residue and $455 in cash, Randolph said.

The case is still under investigation.

Aguirre is being held in the Routt County Jail on $20,000 bond.

Kali's Boutique broken into early Friday morning

Police are investigating a Friday morning burglary at Kali's Boutique, 525 Lincoln Ave.

Boutique employees arrived at work Friday morning to find the deadbolts on both the shop's front and back doors unlocked, some clothing strewn on the floor and other clothing missing.

"It appeared (the suspects) were shopping," Steamboat Springs Police Sgt. Nick Bosick said.

"Some of the things they tried on they didn't like and left them on the floor, other things they took."

The burglary happened sometime after midnight Friday morning, Bosick said.

There were no signs of forced entry; the deadbolts were either opened by someone involved in the burglary or one may have been inadvertently left unlocked by a store employee the evening before.

Police recovered the stolen merchandise but could not comment further on the case as it is under investigation.
