Melissa Roddy has joined Steamboat Pilot & Today as the newspaper's city editor.

As city editor, Roddy is responsible for making story assignments, editing stories, updating the Happenings section and helping the newspaper's reporters with writing and reporting. She also serves on the newspaper's editorial board.

Roddy most recently served as senior editor for Practical Horseman magazine in Unionville, Pa. She worked for the Pilot & Today and Hayden Valley Press from 1996 to 2000 as a reporter and copy editor. She is a 1996 graduate of the University of Colorado with degrees in anthropology and journalism.

Martin certified as kitchen designer

William Martin of Kitchens Unlimited in Steamboat Springs has passed the test required by the National Kitchen and Bath Association for recognition as a certified kitchen designer.

Martin is a master cabinetmaker who has owned and operated his own cabinet shop specializing in kitchen construction for more than 20 years.

Martin is among fewer than 3,000 certified kitchen designers world wide.

In order to achieve that status, he had to demonstrated knowledge of all elements associated with kitchen design and construction.

They include layout, design, problem solving, and drafting.

An understanding of electrical and plumbing issues related to kitchens is also required. Martin can be reached at 879-4642.

Hazie's restaurant

Hazie's restaurant at the Steamboat Ski Area made the list of "10 great places to dine high on the slopes" in the

March 7 issue of USA Today.

Charles Leocha, who created SkiSnowboard.net, included the restaurant at the top of the Steamboat gondola among some lofty company that include the Alpenglow Stube in Keystone, Snow Park Lodge in Deer Valley, Utah, The Roundhouse at Sun Valley, Idaho, Game Creek Restaurant at Vail and Cloud Nine Alpine bistro in Aspen. Also on the list were restaurants in New Hampshire, New Mexico and Vermont.

"With the glittering lights of the Yampa Valley below and a menu that includes escargot au fromage and crispy BBQ ginger honey duck," Leocha wrote, "life is good."

State's gas prices rise past $1.65

Colorado's average retail gas price rose 1.3 cents this week, as the state's average for regular, self-serve, unleaded gasoline increased to $1.66 per gallon, according to AAA Colorado's Weekly Gas Price Survey. Meanwhile, the national average for unleaded gasoline increased 2.3 cents to $1.684 per gallon.

The price of regular unleaded in Steamboat began at about $1.719.The nationwide price for gasoline is up 11.7 cents compared to one month ago and is running 50 cents more than a year ago. Colorado's average is up 15.4 cents from one month ago and is 48 cents more than last year. Colorado's statewide average is running 18 cents more than this time in January 2001.

Of the cities reporting, gas prices are mixed.

Vail and Durango showed the largest increase of 4.3 and 3.5 cents, respectively. Greeley and Grand Junction also showed increases of 1.7 and 1.6 cents. While not the highest in the state, of the cities reporting, Vail's gas price increased to $1.95.6 cents per gallon.

Local investment seminar offered

Steamboat Springs resident and Vice President of Wachovia Securities' Private Client Group David J. Gordon will conduct a seminar on "Managed Money, a Better Way to Invest" from noon to 2 p.m. March 31 in the community room of the Pilot & Today at 1901 Curve Plaza.

With more than 25 years of experience, Gordon is a frequent speaker and an author. He is a faculty ethics instructor at the Wharton School CIMA Certification program, an investment advisor, and former practicing attorney.

Attorneys and CPAs receive two hours of continuing education credit, including one ethics hour. There is no charge for this presentation. Instead a $15 donation for the Routt County United Way is requested, but not required.
