Positive impact

Triple Crown has a positive impact on Steamboat.

Spend wisely

I think that Routt County should take the $17 million they want to spend on a new courthouse, which no one wants, and spend it on Emerald Mountain, which everyone wants. If the money belongs to all of us, then we should spend it on something that helps all of us.

No housing authority

No, there should not be a regional housing authority. What's the crisis? When you drive around town, there are lots of vacancies, lots of things for rent. The market should take care of itself.

Fowl photo

I wanted to express my dismay at the inappropriate picture of the ducklings on the raft on page 2 of Friday's Steamboat Today. They should not have picked up the ducklings and you guys should not have put that picture in there.

Leash the dogs

This is a notice to all you canines out there. I realize the Core Trail through town is a great place to walk your owner and/or owners. However as an avid trail user, I grow weary of dodging your owner. Most of the time you dogs even attach the leash to your owner but fail to hold the other end. So I ask all you dogs to please use a leash on your owner; the Core Trail is a very busy place. A big thank you goes out to all the dogs using leashes to control their owners.

Budget questions

I thought that the city and county had a budget problem, but now they are considering spending $160,000 a year on a new program, one that has been rejected by voters in the past. Homeownership is something that is earned -- earned by creating value to society and being paid for it, then saving, saving, and saving. In the 2000 census, 69 percent of Routt County residents owned their homes. This is an increase from 61 percent in 1990. Looks like many people practiced the earn-save-buy formula. Compare the 2000 home ownership rate to counties with influential housing authorities: Pitkin, 59 percent; Eagle 64 percent; Boulder, 65 percent; and Denver, 52 percent. Between 1990 and 2000, none had as much of a homeownership rate increase as Routt County. Could these housing authorities be decreasing overall homeownership?
