Fourth of July activities abound


The Fourth of July is just around the corner, and the Yampa Valley will be host to an array of events and festivities during the holiday. The following is a preliminary calendar of events happening in Steamboat Springs, Yampa, Hayden and Oak Creek during the holiday weekend.

Steamboat Springs

n The Routt County Republicans will meet at 8:30 a.m. July 4 on Yampa Street to prepare for the Fourth of July Parade. Call 870-2891.

n The Fourth of July Parade will be held at 10 a.m. on Lincoln Avenue. Call 879-0880.

n Steamboat Springs High School's Class of 1973 invites faculty and alumni to a class reunion July 4 and 5. At 6 p.m. July 4 faculty and alumni can meet at the Yacht Club for cocktails. Lunch will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 5 at the Steamboat Springs Community Center and will cost $15. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. July 5 at the Ore House and will cost $35. n The Steamboat Springs Lions Club will host a pancake breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. July 4 at the Steamboat Springs Community Center. The price is $10 for adults, $5 for children and seniors, with proceeds benefiting the Lions Club scholarship fund. Call 879-5853.

n A free community concert featuring patriotic music by the Boulder Brass Ensemble will be held at 11:30 a.m. July 4 at 800 Oak St. in front of the Tread of Pioneers Museum. Call 970-879-5056, Ext. 105

n The second annual Art on the Mountain festival, featuring a wide variety of arts and crafts, food vendors, entertainment and activities for all ages, will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 4-6 in Gondola Square.

n The Strings in the Mountains High Country Garden Tour will be Saturday, July 5. The Garden Market and lecture will be at 8:30 a.m. The self-guided tour of the gardens will be from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

n Tickets are $15 if they are purchased before the event. Tickets are $20 the day of the tour. Call 879-5056, Ext. 105 to order tickets. Spasso box lunches also are available. The lunches cost $10 if prepaid by July 1 and $12 the day of tour. Call 871-1488 to order a box lunch.

n The Chamber Music Concert "Made in the USA" featuring the composers Copland and Dvorak will be at 8 p.m. on Saturday in the Strings in the Mountains Music Tent in Torian Plum Plaza. The cost is $18 for adults and $5 for children between 6 and 18 years old. Call 970-879-5056, ext. 105.


n Friends of South Routt Library District will host a Flapjack Feed from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. July 4 at the Yampa Ladies Aid Hall. Funds raised will support the library district. Call Robin at 638-1019.

n A polo game featuring "real cowboys" will be held at 4 p.m. on Main Street. Fireworks will begin at dark. Call Arlene Porteus at 638-4496.

n The Yampa Quilt Show will be held from 10 a.m. to noon July 4, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 5 and 1 to 4 p.m. July 6 at the American Legion building in Yampa. Call Hildred Fogg or Arlene Porteus at 638-4496.

n The Fourth of July Parade will begin at 1 p.m. on Main Street. Every child younger than 12 will receive a 50-cent piece, and prizes will be given for the best costumes. A barbeque will be held at the school grounds following the parade. Call Arlene Porteus at 638-4496.

Oak Creek

n The Soroco High School Class of 1963 will hold its 40th reunion July 4 and 5 in Oak Creek. Class members will meet at 6 p.m. July 4 at Decker Park and 8 p.m. July 5 at the Colorado Bar and Grill.


n The second annual Hayden Valley Summerfest will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. July 5 at Hayden Town Park on South Third Street. At 11 a.m., African dancers will perform and give children lessons. At noon, the 3-Wire Band will perform.

n At 1:30 p.m. the trick jugglers "We're Not Clowns" will perform. At 2 p.m., The Lone Survivors will perform. At 4 p.m. Rob Walker will perform magic tricks, and at 5 p.m. the Smokehouse Band will play.
