Officials weigh in on update
Community recommendations to go before city, county
Sunday, June 8, 2003
Steamboat Springs City and county officials will be asked this week if they are willing to follow the community's direction in updating the Steamboat Springs Area Plan.
If the two planning commissions, city council and county commissioners agree with community input gathered during the area plan update process, consultants will begin working on a draft of the plan.
The directions also recommended a multi-prong approach to solving traffic congestion on Lincoln Avenue. Public input thus far supports building a Yampa or Howelsen bypass as growth continues, as well as supporting public transit and alternative transportation.
The directions also recommended establishing dedicated funding sources for open space and environmental protection and pointed to building a stable, sustainable funding source for capital projects.
Under economic development, directions promoted diversifying the economy while still supporting tourism and creating design standards for big-box retail stores.
