"The widow she cried over me, and called me a poor lost lamb, and she called me a lot of other names, too, but she never meant no harm by it. She put me in them new clothes again, and I couldn't do nothing but sweat and sweat, and feel all cramped up," Huckleberry Finn said in Mark Twain's classic.
Huck didn't want to do anything but wear overalls and make mischief with Tom Sawyer. "Thick as thieves," they were.
Folks in Hayden might spot one of the two from the "band of robbers" June 7 at Hayden Town Park when the Hayden Recreation Board kicks off summer with "Huck Finn Day." Everyone is encouraged to do their best impression and dress up like the fabled characters Huck Finn, or his girlfriend Becky Thatcher.
A fishing pole is required for the festivities beginning at 9 a.m., in which participants can register for fishing and costume prizes. The Colorado Division of Wildlife will provide 50 fishing poles for those without and help stock the creek with fish. Prizes will be presented to the people who catch the first, biggest and smallest fish.
The Colorado Division of Wildlife also will have activity stations set up to give advice on aquatic insects, casting and handling fish. Lunch will be served.
