Hayden West of Steamboat Springs, the town of Hayden (population 1,500) offers several restaurants, bars, retail shops and even a museum, as well as a handful of recreational opportunities with a flavor slightly different than that of Ski Town USA.
A visit to the Hayden Heritage Center is a must for inquiring minds. A walk through the museum, which was originally a railroad depot, gives visitors a quick history lesson on how the small town got its start.
The museum has a large collection of artifacts from the area, including many copies of the old Routt County Republican newspaper and its original printing press, which came to Hayden in 1908. There is also an Old West exhibit, with a collection of traditional cowboy equipment.
Outdoor lovers who come through town and stock up for a big adventure, whether it is rafting or fishing on the Yampa River, climbing Mount Harris or camping in the rolling hills that surround the town.
Yampa River State Park is two miles west of town, and features a popular campground with modern accommodations and a beautiful view of the Yampa River.
Hayden visitors also can make a stop by Hayden Speedway on the south side of town to view off-road stock car racing.
The first race was held May 17 and races will continue every other week after that, Yampa Valley Auto Racing Association President Justin Gallegos said.
Many improvements have recently been made at the track, including the actual track, new lights, new speakers, landscaping and seating areas.
