pianist opens music week

— This week at Strings in the Mountains begins with a Different Tempo concert at 7 p.m. tonight.

Grammy Award-winning pianist George Winston will perform songs from his recently released CD, "Night Divides the Day -- the Music of the Doors," a tribute to his favorite ensemble of all time. Join Strings in the Mountains in support of LIFT-UP Food Bank by bringing a donation of canned food to the concert. There will be collection baskets at the entrances.

Tickets are $22.

At noon Tuesday, Strings presents a musical talk featuring Colombian guitarist Ricardo Cobo. Cobo will talk about his instrument with Dr. Ken Greene and demonstrate the many styles of the classical guitar.

This event takes place at Centennial Hall, 124 10th St., and is free and open to the public.

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, join the Concertmaster of the National Symphony Orchestra, Nurit Bar-Josef, in an evening of music entitled "Trio Treasures."

Tickets are $16 for adults and $5 for juniors. The performance will be followed by a "Meet the Musicians" casual reception.

Music on the Green takes place at 12:15 p.m. Thursday at the Yampa River Botanic Park. The hour-long free concert will feature Strings' Young Artists in Residence, the Hyperion String Quarte, in "Classical Gas."

There is limited parking, so those wishing to attend are asked to bus, carpool, walk or bike to the park.

There is no parking on Pamela Lane. When the lot is full, alternative parking is available at the Hampton Inn and Suites with continuous van shuttle service provided by Mountain Resorts between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Steamboat Artlink (http://www.

Thursday evening, Strings presents a family concert at 5:30 p.m. Dance, theater, music and children all combine in a wonderfully entertaining production of "Mody and the Dance of Life," choreographed by Robin Getter of the School of Rhythms and Dance and featuring African drummer Fara Tolino of Guinea.

The program is part of the Steamboat Springs Arts Council's Summer Kaleidoscope program.

Tickets are $1 for kids and $8 for adults

Strings presents another Different Tempo concert at 8 p.m. Friday. New Orleans-style band The Iguanas will rock the house with their combination of Caribbean, Latin and R&B rhythms.

Tickets are $22.

Chamber music takes center stage at 8 p.m. Saturday. Colombian guitarist Ricardo Cobo will present a South American-flavored program entitled "Folk Seasonings."

Tickets are $18 for adults and $5 for juniors.
