Women's triathlon is focus of clinic

— Kirsten Ames and Mo Valenta realize women will have butterflies in their stomachs before, during and even after participating in a triathlon.

They just want to help get them flying in formation.

In an effort to better prepare women to enter events, Ames and Valenta are holding a clinic July 20, focusing on the disciplines of a triathlon -- swimming, biking and running.

"There are ladies out there perfectly fit to do a race, but until they get their confidence up, they aren't aware of their own potential," Ames said.

Ames was a professional triathlete from 1986 until 1990, competing around the world.

She and Valenta have offered a variety of clinics to women, providing the social setting and comfort level many seek when learning something new.

"This is casual," Ames said. "It's not like it's a big, sponsored race. ... It's just to gain a little bit of experience because it's different when you have to put all three events together."

The clinic will be held at the Catamount Ranch and Club off Routt County Road 18 south of Steamboat Springs.

The clinic costs $15 and interested women can pick up registration forms at the Steamboat Springs Health and Recreation Center, Healthy Solutions, City Market, Safeway or call Ames at 879-3376.

Registration forms need to be completed by Friday, Ames said, and women will be responsible for bringing their own gear -- swimsuit, bike, running shoes -- to the clinic.
