Longtime Hayden resident Jim Carns died July 7, 2003, at The Memorial Hospital in Craig. He was 96.
Jim was born April 19, 1907, in Downs, Kan., to William and Laura Carns. The family moved to Craig from Paxton, Neb., in 1917. They lived in Craig and Browns Park before settling in and around Grand Junction.
Jim worked for the Fleming Cattle and Sheep Ranch in California for several years, and then in Nevada copper mines.
He enlisted in the Army Air Force Jan. 21, 1942. Jim served in the South Pacific, Australia, Okinawa, Japan, and New Guinea during World War II. He was honorably discharged Oct. 15, 1945.
Jim married Elin Sjostrom of Hayden Nov. 10, 1948.
He enjoyed camping and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joe; a half-sister, Lulu; and three half-brothers, Ray, Clarance and Dan.
Jim is survived by his wife; a son, Ivan Carns of Hayden; two grandchildren, Katlyn and Brad; a sister, Ruby Wright of Grand Junction; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Saturday at Hayden Cemetery.
