— A 72-year-old man had to be airlifted by a Flight-For-Life helicopter after reportedly suffering from exhaustion while backpacking Monday in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness, Routt County Under Sheriff Dan Taylor said.

Gene Martin, a Clark homeowner, was hiking with friends, family and Steamboat Lake Outfitter guide Don Markley near North Lake when he developed health problems, said Chad Bedell of Steamboat Lake Outfitters.

The North Routt Fire Protection District, Routt County Search and Rescue, Routt County Sheriff's Office and Routt County Emergency Manager Chuck Vale responded to a satellite call from someone in the group, Taylor said.

The first rescuers arrived on the scene at 5:10 p.m.

Realizing Martin might not be reached by ground rescue crews in time, Taylor arranged for the helicopter rescue.

Flight-For-Life transported Martin to Yampa Valley Medical Center.

Medical center officials could provide no information on Martin or his condition.
