Steamboat Springs After three consecutive losses to open the new year, the Chix with Stix hockey team earned two recent wins over Denver University at Howelsen Ice Arena.
The Chix defeated the Pioneers 8-4 on Jan. 17 and 6-2 on Jan. 18, finding an offensive attack that had disappeared since the Steamboat team defeated the Denver Bandits 5-3 on Jan. 3, its last win prior to defeating DU.
Diane Dwire scored four of Steamboat's eight goals against the Pioneers on Jan. 17. Heidi Chapman added three assists and a goal for the local women's team.
Steamboat scored three goals in the first and second periods each to lead the Pioneers 6-3 after the second period.
The Chix scored twice in the third period before DU added the final goal of the game.
Steamboat had 29 shots on goal to 17 from DU.
The Chix had another strong defensive effort to go with their offensive output in their Jan. 18 win over the Pioneers.
DU didn't score until early in the third period. By then, Steamboat had established a 5-0 lead off goals from five different women: Dwire, Chapman, Gretchen Van de Carr, Alexa Slaunwhite and Robin Schoewe.
Once again, Steamboat outshot DU, 32-23.
The Chix return to home ice this weekend for games on Saturday and Sunday against the Fort Collins Flames.
Fan appreciation night is on Saturday before the 9 p.m. game against the Flames.
The Chix with Stix are currently 4-8-1 and will be hosting both the "A" and "B" division state tournaments this spring.
