Tae Bo classes kick off at Hayden school

— On Tuesdays and Thursdays, 23 adults dance and strain through what looks like boot-camp aerobics in Hayden Valley Elementary School.

The group is the first to take Kim Temple's Tae Bo class, sponsored by the Hayden Recreation Board.

"I had done aerobics for years," Temple said, "but when I tried Tae Bo, I had such a blast doing it."

Temple started taking Tae Bo classes two years ago from an instructor in Craig.

"She still does classes there and has a big following," Temple said. "I kept telling friends how much fun it was, but they didn't want to travel."

Tae Bo is a combination of aerobics and martial arts designed to tone and strengthen muscles while providing a cardiovascular workout. It also develops balance and coordination, Temple said.

Tae Bo is not for self-defense, Temple said, though students are learning kicks that are used for self-defense.

"Because you are kicking, punching and blocking, you are always tightening muscles," she said. "Tae Bo is really intense, but it's also what you make it."

Classes run in four-week sessions through April. The next session begins Feb. 4. Classes are held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Hayden Valley Elementary cafeteria. The cost is $22 per session.
