— After posting top results at Arapahoe Basin last weekend, the members of the Steamboat Springs junior development team will return to the slopes tonight to take part in the first Steamboat Cup of the season.

"All of these kids, plus the junior ability (12-14 age division), will take part," freestyle coach Kirra Dyer said. "It's open to everyone (including snowboarders and Alpine kids), but it's pretty much local skiers who take part."

The event at Howelsen Hill will be the first of four Steamboat Cup events this year and will begin at 4 p.m.

Dyer said it's a great chance for her athletes to get experience. She hopes they can build on the results they earned at A-Basin Sunday.

That event was the first competition of the season in the junior development series. It was also the first competition ever for several Steamboat Springs athletes. The first-timers included Jack Berger, Ryan Dyer, Colton Harding and Taylor Johnson. All skied very well, Dyer said.

The junior development skiers are between 8 and 11 years old. Their next regional competition will take place Jan. 19 in Vail.

Steamboat skier Brian Berger finished second, behind Vail's Nick Dalton, in the M-3 boys division.

Steamboat swept the top spots in the M-4 boys division, with Luke Kamieniecki taking the top position and teammate Brett Dalton Lee taking second. Ryan Dyer was fifth, Kyle Horning was eighth, Brandon Roche was ninth and Harding was 29th in that class.

Brandon Cronin of Winter Park won the boys M-5 division. The top Steamboat finishers were Jesse Kamieniecki in third, Matt O'Donnell in fifth, Johnson in ninth and Drew O'Donnell in 10th. Jack Berger was 14th.

On the girls' side, Rebecca Miller of Team Summit won the F-4 group and Vail's Heidi Kloser won the F-5 division. Steamboat's Jessica Mader was second in the F-5 class.
