Ross, Smith lead Sailors

Steamboat Springs Austin Ross and Marty Smith led the Steamboat Springs High School cross country team at the final regular-season meet of the year in Carbondale last weekend.
Ross won the 5-kilometer classic race in a time of 19 minutes, 25.8 seconds. Smith followed Ross in second place (19:32.9) and Middle Park's Cody Wilderman in third at 19:37. There were 73 racers in event.
The race, which was held at the Spring Gulch Nordic Center, was the final event prior to this weekend's state meet in Vail.
Other top Steamboat finishers included Mike Gleason in 15th, Justin Krause in 21st and Keegan O'Hara in 53rd.
Jenny Hamilton of Summit County finished with a time of 21:55.9 to win the girls race. The top Steamboat finishers included Korie Steitz in third (23:41) and Sarah MacCarthy in fifth (24:17).
Steamboat's Lisl Pearson was 27th, Jennifer Hooper was 41st and Rachel Ryan was 57th in the field of 61 skiers.
Earlier in the week, the Steamboat skiers had competed in a freestyle event in Leadville.
Summit's Josh Dayton won the boys event in Leadville with a time of 15:52 and his teammate Meredith Gilliland won the girls with a time of 19:29.
Top Steamboat finishers included Ross in fourth and Smith in 18th. Steamboat didn't have any skiers in the girls race.
The Steamboat skiers will now start preparing for this weekend's state race, which will take place in Vail. The Sailors are expected to send four girls and six boys to the race
