Oak Creek resident Vernon "Cy" Eldon Swigart died Dec. 13, 2003, at the Yampa Valley Medical Center. He was 88.
Vernon was born June 10, 1915, in Blairsburg, Iowa, to Jacob and Pearle Swigart. The family moved to Cosmos, Minn., when Vernon was a young boy. He attended school in Cosmos and Hutchinson, but left high school during the Great Depression to join the Conservation Corps.
Vernon married Gladyce Geier on Oct. 16, 1941, in Clara City, Minn. Vernon served in the Army during World War II, and was shipped to Europe on the first boat.
After his service, Vernon and Gladyce settled down in Cosmos, where he ran the Home Oil Company. He retired in 1977 and moved to Oak Creek five years ago to be closer to his son, Buck. Vernon remained in Oak Creek until the time of his death.
Vernon was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His many hobbies included hunting, fishing, bowling, golfing, snowmobiling and woodworking.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a brother and a sister. Vernon is survived by his daughter, Evilo and her husband Jim Moore of Denver; a son, Buck and his wife Suzanne Swigart of Oak Creek; a brother, Mervin and his wife Delphia of Florida; and three grandchildren.
