Eager snowboarders and free skiers will have to wait at least one more day before they can begin testing their skills against the Mavericks Superpipe and the rails in the terrain park at the Steamboat Ski Area.
Ski area officials announced Friday that Mavericks, believed to be the longest superpipe in North America, would open today. However, a mechanical breakdown has caused a delay in preparing the pipe for opening.
"The guys have been working into the wee hours to get Mavericks ready, but one of two haul-cats they were using to move snow around had a mechanical problem," ski area spokesman Mike Lane said. "If everything goes right, they will be able to open Sunday. If not Sunday, then Monday."
Lane said John Asta, manager of operations at Mavericks and the terrain park, is very aware of the level of excitement from skiers and riders wanting to access the terrain park. His crew is making every effort to get it open, he added. Asta was responsible for designing and building the terrain park.
