District attorney files lesser charges in kidnapping case
The District Attorney's Office filed lesser charges against a man accused of kidnapping his estranged girlfriend than those for which he was arrested.
On Thursday, Todd Phillip Griffith was charged with second-degree kidnapping and two counts of third-degree assault.
The second-degree kidnapping is a reduction in the charge the Steamboat Springs police arrested Griffith on suspicion of Tuesday. Griffith is alleged to have dragged an estranged girlfriend, on foot, from Tamarack Drive to his home at the Dream Island Mobile Home Community.
The police had charged Griffith, 36, with first-degree kidnapping, a Class 1 felony punishable by a life sentence or death.
Second-degree kidnapping is a Class 4 felony and comes with a lesser punishment. The District Attorney's Office also charged Griffith with two counts of third-degree assault, false imprisonment, first-degree burglary with assault and menacing, and criminal mischief.
