Salon gets $10K in upgrades

Alaine Montgomery visited Alice Carroll's Kustom Kuts full-service salon for acrylic nails about a month ago, before Montgomery's daughter's wedding.

"They are beautiful," Montgomery said. "I liked them so much, I had to come back."

Manicures and pedicures are just a smidgen of the service Kustom Kuts now offers. Since buying the business from Karen Fox, of Yampa Valley Realty, six years ago, Carroll steadily has invested about $10,000 in renovations, including, most recently, an addition with a brand new 32-lamp tanning bed with built-in fans and special face-tanning bulbs.

Carroll said she wanted to set a mood for visitors of the new tanning bed. She knocked out a wall to make room for it, where she painted the walls light green and gave the room a beach-like atmosphere, with tropical plants and bamboo blinds.

"The intent was to make you want to be there even if you're not tanning," Carroll said.

This is a much more relaxing way to tan than Carroll's old booth, which required tanners to stand up while absorbing artificial rays, Carroll said.

Carroll also has installed a new pedicure chair that features hot or cold water jets and an electronic back massager. If customers desire, they can choose to have a foot and leg massage following a sit in the chair.

A standard pedicure includes a few minutes in the chair, followed by filing and trimming toenails. The chair is designed to soften the feet to make the process more comfortable, Carroll said.

"It's really a luxury technique, though," Carroll said.

"That would be a good Christmas gift," Montgomery chimed in.

To accommodate working folks, Carroll said she doesn't mind making appointments early or late. Just call 276-3181.
