Cheerleaders photo
I don't normally complain about the newspaper, but in the Aug. 16 Steamboat Today, I thought the photograph of "a shady spot, pictures of a reflection of eyewear" was inappropriate. On page 9, a black and white photo, very small, of the cheerleading camp for the SSHS cheerleaders.
I'm a parent of a cheerleader. These gals worked very hard all summer and couldn't wait to get their picture taken and were advised that the picture was going to be in the newspaper. I am so disappointed that the picture wasn't put on a front cover. Here we are wanting to support our cheerleaders, make them feel good and have everybody in town feel good about them. I don't see why pictures of eyeglasses should be put on the front cover. Clever picture but inappropriate. I think the cheerleaders deserved the front page. After all, a few days ago we had a football player on the cover. Let's give equal time to equal sports.
Chasing a buck
My comment is in response to an article in the Today, "How to lure businesses to South Routt." If luring businesses to South Routt will do for South Routt what luring businesses to Steamboat Springs has done for Steamboat then I would kindly like to say, "no thank you." South Routt is one of the last decent places in the county, and we don't need the pressures, the problems, the troubles that Steamboat has brought on itself by chasing a buck and nothing else.
City is wrong
Not only is the city legally wrong in withholding pay to city employees for 15 days served in the reserves or National Guard, but also the city is morally wrong. These people are serving our country, and the city should do everything to support those who are supporting our country.
Commend our forces
As a Navy veteran, I have to say I think the city is way off base in trying not to pay military reserve time for city employees. Our armed forces are all volunteers and, as can be seen in the papers regularly, they are putting their lives at risk to preserve our freedom and safety here at home. I think their service should be encouraged and commended in every possible way. The fact that one such employee seems to have been paid more for his military reserve time than his city pay is not the point. That he is now going overseas in defense of our country is, and he should not be penalized for whatever level of service he has achieved on a volunteer basis.
City should pay
You bet that city employees should retain city pay for their 15 days served in the National Guard or reserves. That is state law.
It's like jury duty
I don't see why being paid for 15 days of reserves or National Guard duty is any different from getting paid for going to jury duty. I think at that point you either need to give back what you've gotten from the reserves, just like you need to pay back what you've gotten from jury duty in order to keep your own pay.
Why a dog park?
At the city open house to discuss the future of the Bear River parcel, I would like to ask the 30 residents why they think it should be developed as a leash-free dog park. Dog owners do not use leashes at Fetcher pond, the dogs' swimming hole. At Spring Creek Trail, dogs are let loose as soon as they hit the gravel. In the Sanctuary, Blue Sage Trail and all over Steamboat dogs are not on leashes, anyway. Why should they have a special park? I'm sure it would be used until so much waste was there that the dog owners and neighbors would complain about the smell and want city employees to clean it up.
Cyclists have rights
As a cyclist, I get a bit annoyed when auto drivers feel that we are not allowed on the Colorado roads. The Colorado drivers manual states in section 12.4 (Bicycles and Motorcycles) that "Motorists must be on the lookout for cyclists." Section 16 also says that "Bicycles are a legitimate form of transportation" and that "Bicycles are considered Vehicles under state law." By having a Colorado license, you agree to follow the rules of the road, it's the law. I do agree that cyclists have a responsibility to ride in single-file when there is traffic, this too is the law (section 16). Let's not allow the problems of the city become the problems of rural roads, road rage and aggressive driving etc. If I see an aggressive driver, I can call Colorado State Patrol -- Section 12.5 if you want to read the manual again -- and get in touch with the nearest state patrol officer to report the driver. Remember, the automobile is a lethal weapon and can kill. It's not worth it. People drive to get somewhere. Personally I think that they should ride a bike or walk, it would be good for them.
Be courteous.
