Practice makes perfect

Fall season begins Monday for most Routt County athletic teams


The Steamboat Springs boys golf season is under way, but the remainder of Routt County athletic teams officially begins the fall season Monday.

High school athletes at all schools are reminded that to begin practices they must have the completed physical, parental/

guardian permission and insurance coverage forms.

In addition, there may be other forms for each athlete to sign before he or she begins practicing, such as a school's respective drug and alcohol policies.

Steamboat Sailors football players are asked to report to the high school commons at 9 a.m. for a meeting and equipment check-out before the opening of two-a-days at 1 p.m. at the high school field. The team opens its season Aug. 29 at Sierra High School in Colorado Springs.

The Steamboat volleyball team begins practice with the freshmen from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. All others will begin their two-a-days from 9 to 11 a.m. The team opens its season by hosting Middle Park on Sept. 4.

The Sailors boys soccer team will meet from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the high school commons for an orientation/fitness session. Practice will begin at 4 p.m. at a field yet to be determined. The team plays in the Alexander Dawson Tournament near Boulder on Aug. 28-30.

The cross-country team is asked to meet at 5:30 p.m. in front of the high school prepared to run. The team will travel to Lake County to open the season Sept. 6.

The boys tennis team begins practice at 1 p.m. at the Tennis Center. The Sailors open the 2003 season Aug. 16 with home matches against Delta.

The Steamboat varsity cheerleaders will meet at 8 a.m. at the high school for the first of two practices scheduled for Monday. The junior varsity cheerleaders will meet at 1 p.m. at the high school for a two-hour practice.

Steamboat's dance team isn't starting practice until Aug. 18 but anyone interested in being a part of the team or with questions is encouraged to call coach Kim Bates at 879-2297.

Steamboat's golf team officially began practice Aug. 4 in preparation for its first tournament Monday at Bookcliff in Grand Junction.

Hayden football players need to report for practice at 6:30 a.m. for the beginning of two-a-days at the high school. The volleyball players will have an open gym from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday but official two-a-days won't begin until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The Soroco girls volleyball team needs to report at 7:45 a.m. at the high school for practice. During that practice, the remainder of the preseason schedule will be worked out.

Soroco football players need to report at 8 a.m. for the first of two practices on the opening day of the fall season.
