Buick will make -- or break -- town event
Wednesday, August 6, 2003
Golf pro Hank Franks is hoping to get a few last-minute entries for the annual Buick Scramble championship tournament, which will take place this Saturday at Haymaker Golf Course.
The course has hosted the scramble for the past five years, and the tournament is a qualifier for the regional championships, which will take place later this summer at Denver's River Dale Dunes golf club.
"This is the fifth season we've hosted this event," Franks said. "It's a fun tournament that gives golfers an opportunity to go to Florida for the national championships."
Hanks said he had seven teams signed up to play, enough to make the tournament an official qualifier.
Four-person teams with certified USGA handicap indexes are eligible to compete in the Saturday tournament. Franks said golfers could register through Friday.
The winning team will be invited to advance to the regional championships later this summer.
The entry fee is $50 plus applicable green fees. The Steamboat event will be the last qualifier for the regional championships in Colorado.
Franks said this could be a make-or-break year for the tournament in Steamboat. If no more than seven teams come out to play in the event, it will be hard to continue to host in Steamboat, he said.
"We need a couple of more teams to get into the comfort zone," Franks said.
