Hayden Hayden residents don't always shop in Hayden.
Routt County Cooperative Extension Office Family Consumer Science Specialist Debbie Alpe will explain why when she presents the findings of a consumer preference survey from the 2003 Economic Summit to the Hayden Town Board at its Thursday meeting.
The study focused on why and where Routt County residents shop outside of the county. Alpe will present the findings from Hayden residents.
She said the most common reasons people shopped outside were cost, variety and convenience. Many residents will go to Craig or Steamboat for groceries, or even farther to Silverthorne or Grand Junction to Target or Home Depot. Some also shop on the Web, Alpe said.
"Already we've seen (local businesses) keying in on competitive prices," Alpe said. "Some people are saying 'maybe we should keep our tax dollars at home. The survey is good for both the businesses and the consumers."
In other business: the Hayden Town Board officially will accept a $158,000 grant from the Gates Family Foundation.
The funds will be used for proactive planning efforts, most of which will be directed toward impact studies and related software to analyze the 900-acre Sunburst Ranch.
The Town Board also will release funds it had earmarked for the planning efforts before receiving the grant.
n For the first phase of Sunburst Ranch, Sunburst Park North, the Town Board also will consider a contract to hire planning consultant Tim Katers, of Loveland-based Katers and Associates, for about $80 per hour, Town Manager Rob Straebel said. The money spent for the consultant will be reimbursed to the town by Sunburst developers 4S Development.
n Routt County residents whose property lines are within 200 feet of Hayden water mains will be eligible to tap into town water, upon approval of a resolution Thursday.
After a county resident's request to tap into town water was denied several months ago because of a moratorium, some trustees thought a change needed to be made in the law to allow some exceptions.
The resolution will stipulate that approval of out-of-town taps will have to be approved on a case-by-case basis by Public Works Director Frank Fox.
Also, it will be the owners' responsibility to fix any problems that may occur in their water line up to the tap.
n The Town Board will conduct the final reading of an ordinance to regulate the location of carports.
The ordinance states that all carports will be regarded as a structure, which must abide by all zoning regulations, including setback requirements.
Current carports that do not meet setback requirements will not have to be moved, but if they are moved in the future, they would have to meet setback requirements.
The Town Board will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Hayden Town Hall, 178 W. Jefferson Ave.
