Man dies in tractor-trailer accident

— A man died late Monday when his tractor-trailer rig crashed near the base of Rabbit Ears Pass.

The truck was traveling west on U.S. Highway 40 when the vehicle lost control and toppled off the road, coming to rest on its side on the north side of the road way.

The accident occurred at about 10:50 p.m. near mile marker 142, State Patrol reported.

The man died at the scene, the State Patrol said. Routt County emergency crews worked feverishly to free a woman trapped inside the truck.

Police also were checking to see if there were other passengers in the truck.

Toys and videos were found among the wreckage, indicating to investigators that a child may have been traveling with the couple. However, as of early this morning, no other passengers had been located.

The identities of those in the truck were not known.

The wrecked trailer belongs to Hamon Custodius. It was not clear what was being hauled in the trailer.
