Squirts overcome challenges in late season

— After wrapping up the hectic regular season with nine wins, the Mason Morse Squirts knew they were going to face more than a few challenges during a two-tournament postseason run.

The first came March 15-16 in Craig at the Rocky Mountain Youth Hockey League finals. The Steamboat team posted a 7-1 win over Glenwood Springs and a 2-1 win over Steamboat Springs' Peak Mechanical to take third place in the final standings.

The Steamboat team was hampered by second-round loss to Craig that took them out of the title hunt.

Justin Anderson, Will Hunter, Sam Robards, Isiah Forsyth, Brian Moore and Christian Turner scored goals for the Steamboat team. Coleman Holloway and Anderson shared goalkeeping duties.

A week later, the Steamboat team took another shot at a tournament title at the Hyland Hills Spring Fling Tournament in Westminster, March 21-23.

The local team didn't win a title, but skated away with was a lot of experience.

The local squirts fell to Tri-City out of Nebraska 7-2, Hyland Hills 3-2 and the Cheyenne Wind 3-1.

Steamboat also tied another Hyland Hills team 2-2 in the second game of the tournament.

Robards, Turner, Connor Brown, Forsyth, and Brendon Taylor all scored goals. Hunter, Anderson, Taylor and Anderson all shared duties in goal.

The events wrapped up the season for the Mason Morse squirts team. The squad was 9-6-1 in the regular season.
