Pearl Elrene Stehley
Pearl Elrene Stehley, 98, died Sept. 12, 2002, in Steamboat Springs. Pearl was born Oct. 14, 1903, in CaCity, to John O. and Lillie Surbrugg. Raised on a farm near Lamar in southern Colorado, and following her graduation from high school, she studied at the University of Colorado, receiving a degree from the school of pharmacy in 1925. She was affiliated with Delta Zeta sorority while at the university.
Pearl taught chemistry, physics and mathematics in Castle Rock, returning to the university to earn her master's degree in chemistry and pharmacy in 1929. In 1930, Pearl married Jack Stehley and moved to Steamboat Springs, where she has lived the rest of her active life. Pearl belonged to the Steamboat Springs Women's Club and Ladies Recreation Club. She was initiated into the Eastern Star in 1933 and PEO in 1937. In 1954, she became state president of PEO. In 1961, she was elected Worthy Grand Matron of Eastern Star and remained actively involved with the officers and members of both organizations to the present day. Pearl was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi service sorority and a member of the United Methodist Church.
Later in life, Pearl returned to teach science at Steamboat Springs Junior High, continuing her own education at universities in Boston, New York and Hawaii. She also maintained her pharmacy license and continued to work in drug stores in Steamboat, Craig, Meeker and Rangely.
Pearl was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Charlie; nephews Bill and Bud Surbrugg and her husband, Jack.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Sue Stehley of Colorado Springs; niece Phyllis Allen of Steamboat; grandnieces, Gina Walker of Steamboat, Sandra Surbrugg, Jeanne Surbrugg, Beverly Nye and Jo Benson; grandnephews Lon and Tod Allen of Steamboat, Rick Surbrugg and Ed Surbrugg.
Pearl will be missed by a large extended family and many close friends. She will also be remembered fondly as Auntie Pearl, Grandma Pearl and as friend to those in need.
