Soroco volleyball squad meets its match

— Soroco coach Amy Pankonin said Meeker's defense at net and in the back row was the best her team had seen all year.

But the Rams waited until the second game to put it to the test, falling 15-0, 15-12 Friday night in Oak Creek.

"I think they overpsyched themselves," Pankonin said regarding her team's start." They overreacted to everything. I can't say they played bad."

And the Rams certainly played well in the second game as the two teams exchanged the lead before the Cowboys pulled away at the end to win by three.

"Meeker played the best defense I've seen yet," Pankonin said. "It kind of took our kids' breath away."

Pankonin said spikes that usually hit the ground were either blocked back or dug up by the Cowboys' back row. Her attackers, particularly senior Meg Hayne and junior Hallie Shiner, were not accustomed to it.

However, the duo once again led Soroco in kills. Shiner recorded four, while Hayne and Michelle Biles had two apiece. Junior setter Kaleyne Gneiser had one tip that went for a kill.

The Soroco squad returns to action today when it hosts North Park at 3 p.m. with the JV and C team games set to begin at 1 and 2 p.m.
