Steamboat Springs Local golfer Jeff Franks took a pretty straightforward approach to playing in the Rifle Bears Invitational Tuesday.
"I just hit the fairways and the greens all day," Franks said. "I didn't have a lot of birdies or a lot of bogies out there and it all worked out."
Franks finished the round with a one-under-par score of 71.
Grand Junction's Eric Winder finished second at 72 along with Rifle's Jeb Savage and Jarred Brown. Montrose's Chris Lundberg finished in third place at 73 behind the leaders.
"I was pretty happy with the way all of our golfers played," Sailor coach Jason Deigert said. "It's nice to see Jeff (Franks) keep his streak going."
Franks has recorded two firsts, a second and a third place in four tournaments this year.
Franks got a late start because he was playing in national-level tournaments at the start of the season and has been splitting his time between golf and football.
Fellow Sailor Kenton Gamache also continued to stay hot by shooting a round of 81.
Steamboat's Hunter Hidalgo finished at 82 and Cody Sherrill shot an 83. Sailor Ryan Brees finished at 97 to give Steamboat a team total of 234.
"It was a pretty good day," Gamache said. "Right now, I'm pretty happy with shooting in the low 80s."
Gamache said he played a pretty conservative round Tuesday. He laid up as much as possible and kept his driver in the bag whenever he could.
"This is a tricky course," Deigert said. "There are several places where this course can jump out and bite you."
The Sailors will travel to Battlement Mesa for a tournament today. Deigert said he would take a different group of golfers to Eagle Ranch on Thursday for a tournament there.
