Sophomore and junior biology students from Steamboat Springs High School got a firsthand look at fire ecology on a field trip to the different forest fire spots in the Routt National Forest.

Jason Leo VanHorn, son of Jacinda and Paul VanHorn of Steamboat Springs, was born at 7:02 p.m. Oct. 10, 2002. He weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces and was 20 inches long.

The ballot says Referendum 2A is a property tax to pay for fire and ambulance services in Steamboat Springs.

Where's our vote? Referendum 2C affects residents outside of Steamboat Springs, including Steamboat II, Heritage Park and Silver Spur, yet these people have no vote on this referendum at all. So I hope everyone votes no on 2C.

Neal Clever Wither

Neal Clever Wither was born Sept. 24, 1948 in Steamboat Springs. He was the son of Pete and Annabel Wither. He died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, as a result of a one-car automobile accident on Monday evening, Oct. 14, 2002.

Steamboat auto dealers enjoy strong sales

John Centner of Steamboat Motors is pleased that his prediction of a year ago has not come to pass. Centner's Ford/Dodge dealership had a record month in October 2001, selling 96 vehicles. He expressed concern at the time that once manufacturer-sponsored, zero-percent financing went away, the dealers would find everyone who might have bought a car in 2002 had already made a purchase in 2001.

Advance reservations bode well for ski season

Steamboat Ski Area officials are expressing early optimism about the first stretch of winter based in part on a survey that tells them last year's skiers were more inclined to return to Ski Town USA than at any time in the past.
