Soccer team waits to hear playoff details

— After taking Monday off, the members of the Steamboat Springs soccer team returned to practice Tuesday.

But even as the players began to prepare for this weekend's playoff game, the details of who they would play and when still had to be decided.

"It depends on the outcome of several games," coach Rob Bohlmann said.

The only thing that was for certain is that the Sailors will be at home (most likely on Saturday) and that they will be playing the No. 4 seed from the Northern League (possibly Fort Lupton).

"Right now we just have to focus on the things we have control over," Bohlmann said. "We need to focus internally on our own game."

Steamboat topped Palisade last Saturday, finishing the season with a 7-2-1 record and in second place in the Western Slope League.

Now they are waiting to see which of three teams Niwot, Alexander Dawson and Fort Lupton will earn the fourth seed in the Northern League.

The Sailors have faced both Niwot and Alexander Dawson in the regular season. Steamboat fell to Niwot in an overtime contest 3-2 and to Dawson 3-1 in the first weekend of the season. Bohlmann said he doesn't really care which team advances; he said any one of the three teams would present a challenge for his team in the first round.

Games that will impact the final playoff spot include a contest between Fort Lupton and Windsor, which was scheduled to be played Tuesday night.

The contest between Longmont (a school that plays a 5A schedule but drops into 4A for playoffs) and Loveland will also impact the final standings in the Northern division.

The final game with playoff implications will be between Broomfield and Alexander Dawson, which is scheduled to be played at 6:30 p.m. today.

The Sailors will have to wait until all of those games have been decided to learn the identity of their next opponent. Bohlmann, however, does expect the game to take place sometime on Saturday at Dudley field but nothing is official yet.
