Soroco prepares for Paonia

— Soroco football coach Gary Heide said preparations for tonight's game against Paonia have been similar to the ones made to face Meeker a couple weeks ago.

Both teams like to run counter plays and passes mixed with some dive option. Both teams are much larger in size and numbers than the Rams. And both teams have the possibility of being upset, at least that's the message Heide is delivering to his Soroco squad.

The Rams weren't intimidated in the opening minutes of the Sept. 20 game against Meeker, holding the Cowboys' offense in check, while scoring a touchdown of their own that was subsequently called back by a penalty.

Meeker went on to win 50-7, propelled by Soroco turnovers and strong line play.

"Our goal is to come out and not be intimidated and protect the football and just make good plays one at a time," Heide said heading into tonight's 7:30 p.m. game at South Routt Stadium.

"Paonia is a very good football team," Heide said. "We're telling them we played hard against Meeker. Our goal is to just improve from that Meeker game because we feel that's around the same level of competition."

Soroco is 1-4 this year and 0-3 in league play. Paonia is 3-2 and 2-1 in the league. The Eagles are coming off a 34-6 loss to West Grand, and with a crucial showdown against Meeker next Friday, the Rams are hoping to catch Paonia off guard tonight at home.

"I told the team that football is a funny thing sometimes," Heide said. "If the ball bounces your way enough times early anything's possible."
