Skier in serious condition after accident

— A Steamboat Springs man is in serious condition after hitting a tree while skiing Friday at the Steamboat Ski Area.

Eric Heffley, 31, was rushed to Yampa Valley Medical Center and transported to Denver Health Medical Center shortly after the accident.

Denver Health reported Heffley had suffered internal head injuries and that nothing was broken.

He was wearing a helmet, Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. spokesman Mike Lane said.

Heffley was coming down Sunset onto Duster when he hit some cat tracks, lost control and slammed into a tree, Lane said.

Christine McKelvie, public relations director for Yampa Valley Medical Center, said Heffley sustained "multiple trauma."

Ski Patrol immediately responded and transported Heffley down the slope, Lane said.

The incident, which occurred before 10 a.m., marked the first injury of the ski season.

No other injuries were reported Friday, Lane said.
