— Snow couldn't stop the local Chix with Stix hockey team from opening its season on Nov. 2 and 3 in the Front Range.

A storm prevented many players from arriving at the Sun Ice Centre until ice time, as the Chix went on to lose 3-2 to the LeftHand Brewery Brewsers 3-2 in the season opener.

The Chix were the first to score off Diane Dwire's goal from the blue line in the first period. Sue Heineke was credited with the assist. The Brewers scored the next two goals before the Chix evened it up at 2-all in the second off a goal from Heineke.

The score remained tied until LeftHand got a shot past Chix goalie Carol Vittore with less than three minutes on the clock.

A penalty in the closing two minutes hurt the Chix's chances for evening the score. They pulled Vittore, making it five-on-five but were unable to find the back of the net. Vittore stopped 30 out of 33 shots.

The Chix's drive down to Colorado Springs for a game against the Colorado College Tigers proved more to the liking of the Chix with Stix on Nov. 3.

Winning easily, 8-2, the Chix got goals from four different players: Lee Cox, Dwire, Liz Schnackenberg and Karen Post. Heineke, Julia Wallace, Dwire, Kit Rice and Sheila Henderson were all credited with assists.

In her first full game with the Chix, goalie KC Amon came up with the win.

The Chix with Stix were scheduled to play their home opener against Vail on Nov. 9, but the game was canceled because of weather. Instead, the Chix will make their Steamboat Springs debut on Nov. 23 and 24 when Aspen comes to town.

The first game will be Nov. 23 at 10:45 p.m. and the second will be Nov. 24 at 10 a.m. The Chix play at the Howelsen Ice Arena.
