Steamboat Springs There are more than 1,700 military veterans to honor in Routt County today, and the number continues to grow.
Many of them will gather at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Steamboat Springs from 6:30 to 10 a.m. this morning for the annual Veterans Day breakfast to celebrate the holiday.
Banks, county offices and the post office will be closed in honor of the holiday.
Michael Condie of Veterans Affairs in Routt County said in recent years the number of veteran living in Routt County has grown.
"The number grew by more than 300 in the last three years," he said. "I meet one or two veterans each week."
Schools are still in session today and Steamboat Springs Middle School will host Condie as a guest speaker for the holiday. He will talk about veterans and what the holiday means.
"I'm going to talk about the importance of veterans and why we should take them seriously," he said.
Veterans Day also falls very close to another military holiday, the Marine Corps 227th birthday, which was celebrated Sunday.
Veterans gathered Sunday night at the VFW for a dinner to honor both holidays.
