Steamboat community blood and marrow drive will be Thursday

— Donors are still needed for the Steamboat community blood and marrow drive Thursday at the Steamboat Springs Airport.

The widespread health benefits people from the local community and the state receive through the blood drive are remarkable, said Gloria James, organizer for the blood drive.

James said there are at least two people in Steamboat who are in need of bone marrow. She said by entering the registry people have the opportunity to help.

"That's is wonderful for people to do," James said. People can give a marrow sample while giving blood, which is the easiest procedure for the donor, James said. At this time, James said she still has not received any people interested in a marrow donation.

An appointment for a bone marrow donation does not have to be separate from a blood donation if people decide at the last minute to be added to the registry. There is financial assistance available for people who cannot afford the fee for being added to the registry.

If people cannot give a bone marrow donation, they can still give an apheresif donation, which is a donation of their platelets.

A Bonfils spokesperson said blood Types A or O are the greatest in demand and people with these blood types are encouraged to make an appointment.

About 40 appointments are available for people to give blood from 2:10 to 3:50 p.m. Thursday at the Steamboat Springs Airport.

James said she hopes more people sign up to fill the remaining time slots.

People can sign up for a time if interested in donating blood or being added to the bone marrow registry. Walk-ins are discouraged in the morning and evening, because all appointments have been taken. James said she doesn't want to turn away healthy blood but doesn't think it is fair to make people wait who have scheduled an appointment.
