Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Marathon and Half Marathon are full, but volunteers are still needed to help make next weekend's event a success.
Steamboat Chamber Special Events Coordinator Dina Monico said about 500 volunteers are needed on race day and during the weeks leading up to race day to ensure that everything runs smoothly for the roughly 2,000 people scheduled to run.
This year's Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K and Fun Run are on June 2, and even though they are more than a week away from being run, Monico said she would like to have all the open slots filled with volunteers as soon as possible.
"The community really needs to pull together to make this event come through," Monico said. "A majority of the runners come from outside Steamboat, and the people that do come are so incredibly grateful to those that help."
Monico said she needs people to assist in setting up and tearing down the food tents, while others could be used to distribute the bagged food to participants. Volunteers are also needed to help transport, track and distribute awards, as well as direct bus drivers taking runners to the various starting points on the course.
The timers will be busy at the computer recording times, so individuals are needed to run time cards to runners after they cross the finish line.
A majority of the help is needed with setting up, cleaning up and tearing down tents, tables, chairs and trash cans on the courthouse lawn.
Monico said those interested in volunteering should call the chamber offices at 879-0880 or stop by and check out the volunteer book to get specifics on where they need help.
"The event is a boost to our economy and is the chamber's first big kick-off to the summer," Monico said.
She added that there is room for all types of people to volunteer, for those able to lift and drive to those willing to just supervise the tent areas on race day or even the day before.
