Athletes ready for camps

Steamboat Springs Sailors volleyball coach Wendy Hall is hoping to get a glimpse of what next year will offer during a spring camp this week.
"It's a chance to get a jump on next season," Hall said. "It's a chance to teach the team concept to the younger kids."
Hall's camp is one of four this spring at the high school. Other camps will include football as well as boys and girls basketball.
Hall said the camps are normally more laid back than the normal team practices are in the fall. It's a chance for her to give the older players an idea of where they stand and offer the younger players a few words of advice for what to work on during the summer.
She also said it's a good time for the camps because the student athletes are still in school, but all the other sports have come to an end.
"I think that's why there are so many camps this week," Hall said. "Track came to an end last weekend and the kids don't have anything else to do."
The Sailors volleyball camp will run May 20-23 and will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. in the high school gym. It is open to students entering the ninth through 12th grades. The camp costs $25 and includes a T-shirt.
The Sailors football camp will run May 20-24 and is also open to students entering the ninth through 12th grades next fall. The camp will begin at 3:45 p.m. at the football field. The camp costs $30 and includes a T-shirt and shorts. The program includes football techniques, training and testing. There is no contact so players need only a shirt, shorts and football shoes. The camp will end each day with a hard-core flag football game.
The Sailors girls basketball camps will take place May 28-30 at the high school gym. Cost is $30 and includes a basketball. The camp will run from 3:45 to 6 p.m. each day. The boys camp took place May 15-17.
