Sailors all tied up in Rifle

— The Sailors' explosive offensive attack was contained in Rifle Saturday afternoon by a pesky Bears defense. After 90 minutes of play, including 10 in sudden-death overtime, neither team could muster the win. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.

The game was Steamboat's second in the Western Slope League. Their record moves to 1-0-1 in the league, 2-2-1 overall.

"We felt confident with keeping possession," said Sailors head coach Rob Bohlmann. "When we didn't have possession, we were trying to squeeze and press."

Despite playing without three key starters goalie Kelly Asbury, 2001 Western Slope League player of the year Lia Utu and Cassidy Kurtz the Sailors got on the board first. Nikki Garth pounded Rifle goalie Pam Schieldt with a crossing shot with 12:34 left in the first period. Junior Anya Allen was there to pop the rebound over the Rifle defenders' heads and into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

"When we lost possession, we were looking to put the pressure on them in their defensive third of the field," Bohlmann said. "It worked. They gave it away and we were able to capitalize."

Steamboat struggled to get the ball close for much of the game, with Rifle's defense pushing Steamboat back into its end of the field on several occasions.

But Rifle couldn't come close to the box either, sailing its few good looks at the net high and wide.

Julie Wernig tried to extend the Steamboat lead midway through the second, taking the lead pass from Allen, with nothing but green between her and the goal.

But Wernig was tagged with an offsides call to thwart the drive. Allen had a crossing shot saved by Rifle's Schieldt with 10:35 left in the game.

It looked like Garth's lone goal would be enough for the win when Rifle's Ashley Gavito took a centering pass from Geri Legg and drove a 15-footer past Sailor keeper Ashley Idzahl.

The two battled through two 5-minute sudden-death overtime periods for the tie.

The Sailors next will face Glenwood Springs in Glenwood Thursday.
