Snow fails to materialize
Spring conditions set in on mountain

Steamboat Springs — A storm that was supposed to include a 60-percent chance of snow in the Steamboat Springs area largely missed the Yampa Valley, and the spring-like conditions are expected to continue through the week.
The National Weather Service forecasted snow for Saturday and Sunday after temperatures went into the high 50s on Friday. But the snow stayed northeast of Steamboat. There is a 30 to 40 percent chance of light snow today with temperatures expected to peak in the upper 30s. But sunny conditions are expected to push temperatures back into the 40s by Tuesday.
On the ski mountain, spring skiing conditions have set in icy in the morning and soft and slushy in the afternoon.
With temperatures expected to remain above freezing in the daytime throughout the week, the 63-inch base may dwindle fast. Andrew Schmidt took some turns over the weekend and said the base was still strong, but there were a few new bare spots on the slopes. "Not too much," he said, "just on the runs where everybody was congregating."
Prior to the weekend, Schmidt last skied a week ago. He said he noticed a considerable difference in conditions in six days.
