School board to discuss funds

Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Board of Education will have principals, directors and key education personnel present proposals for educational programs that could use a financial boost to get started through money from the Education Fund Board.
The Education Fund Board is composed mainly of community members that vote on how to spend the half-cent city sales tax that has been designated to the fund board for educational purposes.
About $2 million a year is generated from the local city sales tax to be spent within the local schools, said Paul Fisher, school board president.
Fisher said there will be slightly less money this year because of the decline in tourism in Steamboat.
He said the fund board ensures the money is used with greater accountability in the schools and spent in areas approved by the community such as smaller class sizes, technology, pay-for-performance teacher salary incentives and the addition of new content standards to the curriculum.
The school board will receive input from various education officials to prioritize how the school district should use the money in accordance with the fund board's standards.
Fisher said the school board has no direct influence over deciding how to spend the money but makes recommendations to the fund board.
He said the school board's assessment of what is needed within the schools often helps the fund board recognize educational needs within the local school district that have been overlooked.
