Steamboat Springs When the Chevy Truck U.S. Alpine Championships begin in Squaw Valley this week, several Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club hopefuls will be among the field.
Winter Sports Club director Tony Nunnikhoven said Teddy Berglund, Gaspar Perricone, Joel Adams, Drew Roberts and Tyler Smedsrud will all take part in the men's races. He added that Lisa Perricone and Emily Conlin are scheduled to take part in the women's events.
Other former Winter Sports Club skiers such as Lindsay Lockhart and U.S. Ski Team member Caroline Lalive are expected to race.
"This is a great chance for some of our younger racers to impress U.S. Ski Team coaches," Nunnikhoven said. "It's also a stepping stone for next season."
The local skiers were selected based on points and their most recent performances on the slopes.
Perricone, Conlin and Smedsrud are all coming off top showings at the Junior Olympics.
"It's great because our skiers who are going to this are hitting on all cylinders right now," Nunnikhoven said.
"It's nice to see them peaking at this point of the season."
While national titles will be the goal for many of the racers this week at Squaw Valley, others will be looking to build a foundation for next season.
"These will be fun races," said Alan Ashley, USSA vice president of athletics.
The events will begin on Thursday with the downhill races and continue on Friday with the men's and women's super-G.
On Saturday, Squaw will host the Return of Champions and the slalom will take place on Sunday. The women will race in the giant slalom on Monday and the championships will come to an end on Tuesday with the men's giant slalom.
