Steamboat Springs For more than 11 years, Steamboat Springs resident Bill Nickey has taught the basics of golf to children in Steamboat Springs.
Today, the longtime golf enthusiast will open another summer at the club and in the process invite a new generation of golfers to step onto the course for the first time.
The club's junior program will meet June 13, June 27, July 11, July 25 and Aug. 8. The annual Cowboys shootout has been tentatively scheduled for Aug. 22.
Golfers between the ages of 6 and 13 can take part in program for $5 per session. Sessions run from 8 to 10 a.m. on the above dates. If you do not have junior clubs for your children the course does have some available.
"I think it is important to get young golfers out on the course and teach them the game," Nickey said.
The instructor stresses rules and golf etiquette in the session. He also shortens many of the holes at the course in an effort to teach young golfers not only how to swing the club, but how to manage the course.
