Finding hockey coach proves daunting task

— It's better to be thorough and confident than hasty in a decision. Such is the mindset of those responsible for selecting the Steamboat Springs boys hockey coach.

Athletics director Bruce Crowhurst said, ideally, he wanted to conclude the search process for the new coach before summer dismissal on June 6.

Finding the time to meet with all the candidates and the rest of the committee, in addition to other school commitments, made that deadline impossible to reach.

The date was pushed back even further Wednesday after initial interviews with the four candidates didn't result in a definite hire.

"We're going through a second round of interviews," Crowhurst said. "It's real, real close so we're going to get more info from everybody. We're still in the process of hiring a coach."

Earlier in the process, Crowhurst said three candidates were local applicants, while one was from out-of-town. All four were interviewed on the same day, and the selection was expected to be made shortly thereafter.

However, Crowhurst has said the commitment to finding the right person to work with the team is the top priority, and that's ultimately what the selection committee is most concerned about when selecting a coach for the newly approved program. The process will continue until that person emerges from the pool.
