Four injured in two-vehicle accident

— Four people were sent to the hospital with minor injuries Tuesday evening in a two-vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of County Road 14 and Colorado 131.

Walter Pickart, 69, of Ogden Dunes, Ind., was heading north on Colo. 131 when his green Ford Explorer collided with a blue Toyota Corolla driven by Natalie Maples, 18, of Baxter Springs, Kan.

Maples, whose vehicle was headed southbound on Colo. 131, struck Pickart as she turned left onto C.R. 14.

Maples said she was not paying attention when she began to turn, Trooper Rick Kaspar of the Colorado State Patrol said.

Pickart was not injured, but his wife, who was riding in the passenger seat of the Explorer, and their two grandchildren, who were riding in the back seat, suffered minor injuries.

Maples also suffered minor bumps and bruises, Kaspar said.

Kaspar attributed the absence of major injuries to the use of seatbelts by everyone involved in the accident.

The impact of the collision sent Pickart's Explorer into the ditch and spun Maple's vehicle 180 degrees to the right.

Pickart, his wife and their grandchildren were on vacation at the time.

Maples was visiting family.

The state patrol and the Routt County Sheriff's Office responded to the accident.

Traffic was diverted for about a half-hour while law enforcement and ambulance crews worked on the accident scene.
