Police chase down leads on burglaries

— Local police continued Wednesday working the eight burglaries that hit Steamboat Springs early July 1.

Steamboat Springs Assistant Police Chief Art Fiebing said officers are "still following up on leads."

Fiebing said a group of men were spotted visiting the restaurant/bars that were victimized prior to the burglaries, and officers are looking into to that development.

Two police department detectives are also in contact with law enforcement officials in other Colorado counties regarding possible connections among the burglaries and similar crimes in other cities, Fiebing said.

Burglars hit restaurants and bars on June 16 in Winter Park and June 23 in Eagle County near Vail. The burglaries are being traced back to Longmont, which has experienced 10 break-ins to restaurants and bars since April 20.

Thieves in Steamboat Springs made off with four safes after eight local businesses were broken into Sunday night and early Monday morning.

El Rancho Nuevo, Steamboat Brewery and Tavern, Old Town Pub, Toys in the Attic, Soda Creek Pizza, Lupo's, the Tugboat and Slopeside Bar and Grill reported burglaries to the authorities on Monday morning.

El Rancho, Steamboat Brewery and Tavern, Slopeside and Old Town Pub had safes stolen.

Police have not discussed how much money the burglars may have taken.
