Communications chief quits

Resignation not related to ASC's financial woes

— American Skiing Co.'s Vice President of Communications Skip King has announced his resignation effective at the end of today.

King, who has been with the company for more than a decade, said his resignation is not as sudden as it seems and is not related to the company's ongoing financial difficulties.

"I'm starting my own strategic communications company," King said Wednesday.

King said he had intended to leave ASC last year but remained with the company to help with the search for his successor.

He said there's a strong possibility he will continue to serve in the same capacity with ASC in the near term but on a contract basis.

King has been based at ASC headquarters in Bethel, Maine.

He will locate his new business, Reputation Strategies LLC, in Portland. That will allow him to be closer to one of his loves his sailboat.

King said the past two years have been difficult in many ways, but the fiscal challenges ASC has faced have afforded him valuable training he would not have wanted to miss out on.

Among the specialties of his new communications company will be "crisis communication," he said.

King had good words for his colleagues at ASC.

"These are good people, good resorts and a good management team," King said. "I wouldn't count them out."
