CLARK B. GATHERCOLE
1919-2002

Clark B. Gathercole of Ojai, Calif., 82, died Jan. 7, 2002, after a brief illness.
He was born Aug. 5, 1919, in Canan, Vt., to Evelyn and Leon Gathercole. The family moved to California and Clark attended Pomona Junior College and was editor of the school newspaper, where he met his wife to be, Grace Harris of Encampment, Wyo.
During WWII, he piloted a B-17 Flying Fortress with the Second Bombardment Group, 96th Squadron, Tunisia, and completed 50 missions over Sicily and Italy. After the war, he continued his flying career as a commercial pilot and flew for several nonscheduled airlines flying in the United States and overseas. He finished his flying career in 1979 as senior captain for Global Associates at Kwajalein, Atoll, Marshall Islands.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Grace Harris Gathercole, residing at the Doak Walker Extended Care Center; two daughters, Judith and her husband, Preston Plumb, of Steamboat Springs and Carol and her husband, Alan Olson, of Ojai, Calif.; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his son, Gary Leon Gathercole.
A memorial service is at 1 p.m. Jan. 20 at Concordia Lutheran Church in Steamboat Springs.
